We have come upon a new generation of thinking. Social media has become our source for news, education and facts. The target "feelings." Fear being at the forefront of many of the social movements, which in turn affects the producers of food. Hawaii has become a social nightmare for many of us fishermen, us farmers and us hunters that have never before had to justify feeding families. Our farmers, fishermen and hunters have become vilified as the enemy of our Natural Environment or human health. We are forced to testify against laws that threaten our existence, our culture and our sustainability.
Most people see the final results on the shelves of our local markets. Not realizing the amount of work it took to produce the product. We constantly tend to the crops, the fish, and the animals in efforts to ensure we have food in the coming days, months, and years. We educate those that have the drive and passion to learn how to feed people.
Feeding the people of Hawaii and the world is challenging without the "fear" factor. There was a point in time when fishermen, farmers, and hunters were almost idolized rather then vilified.
Do not give up no matter the odds. We are only 1% of the community, but we are the subject matter experts. We are the ones with generational knowledge, and the passions to do what we do. Educate individuals when you can! Advocate for all food producers! Collaborate with as many groups as possible. Do not be afraid to fail, be afraid of not trying.
